Are you listening?

How many times a day are you asked about directions for an assignment that you just explained? I know it is easy to get frustrated. This is a frequent topic in the teachers' lounge, so take comfort that you are not the only one.

I don't think you can completely solve the problem, but I do think you can take steps to improve it.

Like, any problem, you have to first get to the root of what is causing it. Sometimes there might be different things happening at once.

If I am pressed for time, I have a tendency to rush through instructions. It should come as no surprise that when I rush, I get more questions. I have found a few things that helps me slow down and helps my students, too.

I hold up one finger at a time when I give the steps of the directions. Example: I hold up 1 finger and say, "write your name at the top of the paper." Students hold up one finger and repeat what I say. Then I hold up 2 fingers and say, "step 2 color the pictures before you cut them out." The students hold up 2 fingers and repeat what I said. We continue with this format until all of the directions are given.
For assignments that we do the same format each week, I make picture cards showing the steps so students have visual cues that they can refer to if needed.

If you are not rushing your delivery and the majority of your class is asking questions, your students' hearing may be affected by either allergies or a virus. If you've also had a high number of tattling, then your students are probably coming down with a virus. I have noticed a high rate of tattles 24-48 hours before they show signs of a virus.

Do you only have a small handful of students who don't understand the directions? There can be a variety of reasons for this. Reasons such as:

Did they have frequent ear infections during the toddler years? Children, who have chronic ear infections during the stage when they are learning to follow multi-step verbal directions, often do not learn to tune to the meaning of words. They are used to hearing sounds, but not the actual words because it is muffled when their ears are infected. With these students, you and the parent have to work with them like you would with a child in the toddler years. Start out giving one or two-step directions. Encourage them to look at you and repeat the directions so you know they are tuning in to the words. You will be surprised at how quickly they catch up to their peers.

Is this an English as a Second Language issue? I have had students who had grandma for a babysitter the first 6 years. Grandma only spoke Spanish to the child and the parents only spoke English to the child. The home language survey said English was the language of the home, which was true. After meeting with parents and finding out the additional language, my student was able to get tested and needed support.

Do you have a small group of students? Sit them in a group together so that you can go over the directions with the small group after you explained it to the whole group.
Listen and Draw is an activity that you can used with your entire class to improve listening comprehension.  Students love Listen and Draw lessons because they are drawing and coloring.  I have several FREE files that you can try here.

Let's Get Organized!

I've always felt like organization should be considered a category of multiple intelligence.  There are some people that are naturally stronger in this area than others.   It seems to be intuitive to them, just like the person who can play the piano by ear.  Other people can take piano lessons and become a proficient at playing the piano.  But, they needed guidance to get to that level of competence.

I'm sure you can name at least three students in your class that you would consider organization to be one of their multiple intelligence.  Seventy to eighty percent of your class are probably competent for their age level.  You may observe the following with the other 10% - 20% of your class:
  • Incomplete classwork
  • Difficulty beginning assignments during work time because he or she is looking for supplies that are broken, missing, or hard to find in their messy desk
  • Turning in homework on an inconsistent basis
  • Lost hat, gloves, lunchbox, library book, etc.
  • Backpack is rarely zipped all the way because it is so full of wadded up papers, wrappers from snacks, special toys, etc.
  • Forgot to turn in picture money in time
  • Forgot to turn in field trip permission slip in time
  • Last students to leave the classroom at dismissal time because they are still looking for coat, backpack, hat, etc.
  • Last child to line up at recess because he or she is looking for the ball, jump rope, etc.

FREE resources, tech, science, and literacy Groundhog lessons

It will soon be time for our favorite weather predictor to pop out of his burrow and let us know if Spring is right around the corner or not.  I have been looking for some new videos and found some your students might like.

I just finished a new Groundhog packet.

Students will research groundhogs with the tech connection lesson.  There are charts like the page above that students can take notes.  When students get ready to write their report, there is a circle pie organizer and paper included to use.

Students will research the town of Punxsutawney and compare it to their own.  They will write their results on this Venn diagram.  There are also signs included so you can make a class size Venn diagram.

This is the perfect month to study the weather.  Students will predict what Phil will say on a graph.  There are signs so you can also make a class size graph. After Punxsutawney Phil makes his prediction, record the temperature and type of weather on the printable above to see if he was correct.

Students can write their reflections about the weather in the weather journal.  There are a variety of pages with different prompts.

Students will arrange the colorful word cards in alphabetical order and then record their answers on the page above.

Students will sort the colorful word cards into "ou" like groundhog and "oo" like balloon groups.  Then they will complete one of the three worksheets included with this packet.

Students will sort the colorful word cards into "sh" like shadow and "ch" like children groups.  Then they will complete one of the three worksheets included with this packet.

This can be set up as a center.  For the center, students will arrange the colorful letters into words.  Then they will record their words on one of the printables included with this pack.  You can also use this for seat work or homework because students can cut the letters off at the bottom of the page and arrange them into words, too.

I also have a Sentence Shuffle Trio packet that is about Groundhogs.
