I also use the line.. Sorry I don't argue with 5th graders. The statement asked and answered works great too.
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01793796810114980889noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5574306774783973126.post-72331471367398513942014-01-04T23:24:03.702-08:002014-01-04T23:24:03.702-08:00I agree to not engage. It has taken me a long time to figure out how to do it, but I do it daily now.

I had a GT student 3 years ago and he was one of the most argumentative children I had ever had. He just wanted to be heard. Sometimes I would give him a buddy to listen to him just so he could get it out. He wanted to talk FOREVER and I simply didn't have time. I also gave him a notepad that he could write on and when I was at my teacher table, I would call him over to talk about what was in his notepad. It did take a lot of extra time, but he was an only child being raised by his single mom and his grandmother - both with master's degrees. The family loved to talk & debate!
DenieceDFrideleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03817111776834367007noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5574306774783973126.post-67193184369059307522013-01-21T05:29:03.589-08:002013-01-21T05:29:03.589-08:00I give my students either a spiral notebook or a d...I give my students either a spiral notebook or a drawing journal to "report" or "document" their "concerns".

The students turn their journal in for their teacher to review (as soon as they are able). This takes away the immediacy and doesn't provide immediate gratification.

Great source of documentation and "data collection"!

Best Wishes,
HeatherAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03765002938649480941noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5574306774783973126.post-41315708089126725692012-09-30T08:42:23.460-07:002012-09-30T08:42:23.460-07:00Nancy, if you want to minimize the polka dot backg...Nancy, if you want to minimize the polka dot background of my blog, you can click on "command +" if you are on a MAC. I've found it very helpful for those students that argue ANYTHING. They were talking, I told them not to and they argued that they weren't talking. I just make the statement and walk away. So much less stressful.
Jen Beckerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17656841679232727909noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5574306774783973126.post-15303771906229789302012-09-25T19:57:02.584-07:002012-09-25T19:57:02.584-07:00The tips are great but reading them was difficult ...The tips are great but reading them was difficult because of the polka dotted border....not reader friendly.Nancyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16211953263426028664noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5574306774783973126.post-60110860407496098092012-09-18T06:21:40.594-07:002012-09-18T06:21:40.594-07:00These are great tips!
