Reading: Small Groups & Centers

Are you looking for something new to add a little pep to your small group reading lessons or centers?  Have you lost your enthusiasm?  Do you have trouble holding your students' attention?  If so, it's time to shake things up a little.  I did some retail therapy yesterday and found goodies that would be a perfect solution to the reading humdrums.

I love these little pointers.  The perfect reminder for keeping eyes on the words when you read.

Have you seen these child size fly swatters?  I found these at Dollar Tree.  They actually can be made bigger if you pull out on the handle.  But, if you leave them like this, they are the perfect size for a young student to use in a center or small group.

You can use these as a quick assessment tool.  Perfect addition for when you are working on reading a passage or fluency sentences in small group.

There is never enough time to get everything done that we'd like to get done, right?  When I was a new teacher with tons of energy, I changed ALL of my bulletin boards each month.  Gez!  Can you imagine the amount of time and energy I spent doing that?  As I approached middle age, I began looking for easier and quicker ways to add seasonal touches to my room that was  . . . .   well . . .  quick and easy.  Here is one such idea.  You can buy felt squares at most craft stores or discount stores like Wal-Mart.   These felt squares are great because they come in a wide variety of colors and patterns. They cost less than $1.  I usually cut mine into 3X3 squares so I get 12 per square.  For less than $2 I have added a little color and fun to my room.

My retail therapy was the perfect addition to my Buggy for Reading lessons.
The Buggy series has seasonal lessons and some that can be taught at any time of the year.  These packets are available in levels Pre-Primer - 2nd grade.  Click HERE if you'd like a FREE sample lesson.  Click HERE if you'd like to read more about Buggy for Reading.

Do you follow my Facebook page?  From time to time, I like to give one lucky teacher some of the goodies I use in the pictures from my blog post plus the lesson packet.  This is one of those times!  If you found this post before July 10th  go to my Facebook page and look for the first graphic on this post.  I will choose one teacher who leaves a comment under that post.

Love the idea for the fly swaggers. I found those this spring and glued laminated pieces of card stock to one side so my kiddos could write down answers to questions. They loved using them. Where did you find the eyeball finger pointers?
